Paper summary form

Please fill out the following and mail it to me sometime before 10am of the day of a seminar. Fill out one of these per paper which you read for that class. An explanation of some of the questions you are asked to answer follows the form.

(Please delete everything except the stuff between the bars before you mail the information.)

QUESTIONS:

SUMMARY: Summarize the key points of the paper in a paragraph or three. Assume that the person reading your summary has already read the paper, but needs to be reminded of its contents. That is, you do not need to define terms, provide background, and so on: just the key points.

IMPORT: State the value of the paper as you see it. You might be answering questions such as the following: Why is this work important (or why not)? Is this a novel approach or is it just a minor tweak on other important work? (Try to remember that just because a paper does not interest you, does not mean it has no value.)

QUESTIONS: Provide a thought question or two that occur to you when you read the paper. These could be questions related to the content of the paper: Why did the authors choose approach X when it is generally believed that Y is preferable? You might have a question which makes you doubt the paper: Will it scale to larger or more diverse collections? Is this a canned presentation--that is, will it work for any example other than the one in the paper? Or you might have questions related to the "next step" of the work or to a different application: Can (and if so how can) this technique be applied to image retrieval? Your questions might also relate to other papers which you read for the the seminar (this week or for earlier sessions).
